Demystifying Design: An Argument for Simplicity

What is design? It's art and commerce, fashion and environment. It's industrial and digital, graphic and experiential.

What is design? It begins with ideas--ideas based in purpose. It requires a plan or a process. It yields innovation, invention or creation. It is successful if it elicits response--attention, desire, interaction or purchase.

Where the Wild Things Are: The Most Hipster-ific Movie of All Time?

The new movie, directed by Spike Jonze and written by David Eggers, has spawned a bonanza of hipster cross-marketing.

When some god-awful sequel like Transformers 9 hits screens, you expect the endless parade of merchandise tie-ins. But not so much with Where the Wild Things Are. Nonetheless, the film has become something of a watershed for marketing to the tight-jeans, nerd-glasses set. Witness the current ads running for the film, which featuring gauzy cinematography and...

My favorite beverage turns 250 today…

Millions of revellers are due to raise pints of the world's most famous stout to toast the birth of Guinness. A raft of global celebrations will mark Arthur's Day and 250 years since the Irish brewer went into business. Dublin's St James's Gate will host the hub of festivities to commemorate founder Arthur Guinness and patrons will raise their glasses at 17.59 to celebrate the historical signing of its lease in 1759. FastPencil: Speedy Self-Publishing for Authors

FastPencilo LogoName: FastPencil

Quick Pitch: FastPencil makes the book-writing process painless – from concept to printed book or e-book.

Genius Idea: On top of writing and editing stories for Mashable, I’m also an author – specifically, I finished my first novel, a 130,000 word sci-fi novel, several months ago and am in editing. But I’ve quickly learned that writing is often not the tough part of getting a book...

The New Rules of Brand Competition

The old branding model is past its "sell by" date. It is a product-centered model that comes from packaged goods in the '70s and '80s; offer differentiated benefits that a particular consumer segment is thought to care about. "My peas are picked at the peak of sweetness"...that kind of thing. This model is breaking down as people try store brands and find they are "fit for purpose" at a better price. Now what?

Intel Buys Wind River, Wants More Intel Inside Your Mobile Devices

Intel's no stranger to the world of "small, low-cost notebook PCs" thanks to its Atom chip. Those tiny strips of silicon power pretty...
